The reason Mao was able to instigate the Cultural Revolution was that most of the population treated him as the Emperor without the throne, and not just another human being. The ordinary Chinese suffered hundreds of these types of failed Emperors in the past 3,000 years, without fundamentally questioning this basic relationship between the People and the Authority. Every time it happens, the Chinese people just pray for a “better Emperor next time”. That is the Cultural Belief and it has no future!
People are not Gods. People are not Angels. People are just – well – human beings, and human beings in the position of authority will always treat the other human beings as somewhat expendable means to an end, just like in the Cultural Revolution. The ancient Greek in 800 BC had the political astuteness to be suspicious of Authority. The Chinese in the year 2000 AD is long past due. If people think that the Cultural Revolution was Mao’s fault alone, they’ve learned nothing. On the other hand, if the ordinary Chinese, after experiencing the Cultural Revolution and seeing with their own eyes how their idol could destroy their lives, learned to look straight into the eyes of their leaders, and say, “I’m a man. You are a man. We are equals”, then the Cultural Revolution would be the best gift for the country.
