There was Spain, but Spain (the country) was a load of fly-blown little pueblos and zillions of oranges, so it was much more worth it going to rob their treasure ships round South America instead. Italy wasn’t bad, but that’s where we went for a bit of sun and to be rude to the locals (sort of the job the Spanish coast does today) so we left that alone. If you went a bit further east you met more of the aforementioned Germans, and then people that sounded and behaved like Germans but weren’t, and then loads of gypsies, werewolves, vampires and whatnot until you bumped into the Squid-Eaters, who at least had had a civilisation at one time and had a vague idea of manners, even if it wasn’t up to the standard at home.
There was no need to do this as Britain’s needs (resources, trade etc) were met by its Empire. In addition the British armed forces would have struggled against the large Continental forces in land warfare, without the necessary allied support. Britain’s geopolitical strength flowed through the framework of its naval proficiency. A fight on the continent would have negated this advantage. Prussia (later Germany) for one had a first rate standing army. By the time that Calais fell into French hands, we’d robbed France so blind that there wasn’t anything more worth nicking there, and there wasn’t a Germany in the east yet and so all we’d have got for our pains was a lot of cabbage fields and a load of stroppy people that even the Romans hadn’t bothered with and have no concept of the term “fluffy”.
If you went round the northern bits, why bother? It’s full of trees, more Germans, and stroppy fellows with big moustaches who speak a language that is neither German nor Russian, and has far too many Cs and Zs in it to accommodate any reasonable sort of spelling, and then, when you are setting foot out of their demesne, you bump into the Tsar’s loony ward. Oof. No, thanks. We prefer somewhere where there’s a bit of tin to be made, thanks, and we’ll let Europe carry on its little squabbles and when one of the foreign Johnnies across the Channel gets a bit too big for his boots we’ll go and slap him down again.
