We have about 80 new productions. Some of them are commissioned, some of them are simply new works that the artists have been making in the last few years. But when it comes to the contemporary artists, most of them have new works.
I knew I wanted to do a transhistorical show. But when the show was postponed, I had more time to be a bit more intentional in doing these time capsules, which is what I call these five small exhibitions within the exhibition. Most of them are museum loans that normally take a long time. During the pandemic, they take even longer. We’re still closing some loan forms now. These shows focus on a constellation of artworks that resonate with themes of the show—like metamorphosis or the idea of the cyborg or the idea of the body as a vessel—but not necessarily from an art-historical perspective. So there is one that looks at body transformation through Surrealism but also futurism and also some Dada artists, some Bauhaus artists. So I’m trying to narrate a story that is not necessarily the story you read in art books but focuses on women artists who were working, in my opinion, at often very similar strategies and methodologies to the ones of men.
It shouldn’t matter, but unfortunately it still does matter because we’re very far from being equal, especially in representation in the arts, which should be a reflection of the world we live in, and it’s not. So while I wish we were not here talking about gender, because I don’t necessarily claim it’s a feminist show, it’s important to know that it’s been 127 years of an unequal representation since the Venice Biennale began. We can’t just say, “Okay, we’re over it, it’s fine, now it’s okay.” We still have to reflect on history and who has been part of that history and who has been excluded.
