I was over at their place for a dinner party one weekend to celebrate something and I had showed up early to help prepare some of the food. While moving things around about an hour before anyone else showed up we hear a loud bang from the other side of the house. The guy that went out to the range to teach others was cleaning and reassembling a new gun he just got and accidentally shot himself square in the leg. We rushed in and saw that he hit his thigh almost dead middle and he was GUSHING. The only thing he could do was sit and stare at us for a moment, he quickly went into shock and was really just dazed and I don’t think I have ever seen his girlfriend run faster for her phone in my life.
First it’s like getting snapped with a big rubber band …like a stinging punch. Then it’s sort of numb for a minute. Then. It burns and throbs. And that just gets worse and worse and worse until someone gives you drugs. Shot myself through the forearm with a revolver. No pain – it just felt like… not sure how to phrase it. That the entry and exit wound was under “intense pressure”. It took a good 10-15 minutes before it started to noticably hurt though, but at that time the ambulance arrived and I got morphine. The entry and exit wound was kinda clean. Straight through. Strangely not much bleeding. Like almost no bleeding. Big bumps of blood gathering in “blobs” on my arm. I used to work as a civilian on a Naval Air Base up in Washington state and I knew a bunch if sailors really well. I knew four sailors that were really into gun safety that all lived together to save money and one guy even taught gun safety at a gun range in his free time.
I got shot in the finger. So of all places, a pretty good one. It was also only a .22 so again, got pretty lucky. It still blew the last joint apart so that the last knuckle bone was just hanging on by a flap of skin. Later in life I would get branded, and that’s the most similar sensation I’ve ever felt. Just searing hot pain. Like holding a match too long and just holding it and holding it. Anyway after a few moments I went into shock. I went stupid, just clutched my bad hand with my good hand and plopped my ass on the ground. I could kinda hear every one talking but I couldn’t process it. I couldn’t talk. My memory gets a little hazy and I kinda remember getting dragged to the car. And I kinda remember sitting in the car holding a rag over my bloody hand. And then I remember the doctor cleaning the wound and stitching me up. He did a good job but I’ve still got the scar like 15 years later. When I was 18 a good friend accidentally shot me at point blank range (10 years later found out the gun was recalled for defective trigger mechanism). It went in the back of my leg just below my butt and exited just above my knee cap. Missed the bone and femoral artery. It was like a firecracker went off on my knee, literally a pink mist in the air. It felt like someone hit me with a baseball bat and then stuck a red hot knife in me and left it in for an hour. Entire leg went into a cramp. 10/10 pain, multiple kidney stones are a 9/10.
