Cashmere comes from goats, mostly the type that roams within Asian areas such as Mongolia, Tibet, Northern India, Iran, Afghanistan and Southwest China. It is made from a very fine, close weave and has been manufactured in Mongolia, Nepal and Kashmir for thousands of years.[1] Inside each sweater, probably in a side seam, will be a permanent label with fiber content information and care instructions. I usually toss mine in with a load of matching colors. Washing them with a load of other pieces seems to keep it pretty safe, being tossed and turned. That said, I would wash anything that was near and dear to me by hand. Dry flat.
Just use baby shampoo and hair conditioner an wash it by hand. Just like you wash your hair. However let it dry on a flat surface, never hang or use dryer. Absolutely do not wash your cashmere sweater. I did that by accident once and the sweater shrunk so badly that a 9 month old was too big for it. Always dry clean your cashmere sweaters. It is well worth it. Maybe once a year. Here’s why. The sweater is almost outerwear layer of clothing. It’s not really in contact with my body or holding my sweat and bodily bacteria. Nor am I wearing it on a regular basis indoors at the supper table. The sweater is not really subjected to dirt and bacteria like an outer winter coat is or inner clothing layers. What is important is how I wash my sweater and then place it laid out flat on my bed for even but slow drying out. I even lay a towel on top of it with a few books on it. Doing it this way reduces shrinkage of the sweater.
These shavers let those annoying little balls of pilled fiber through the holes and clip them right off. Just run the shaver back-and-forth over the affected areas and it should only take a minute or so. My family grew super fine Merino wool and some cashmere. My mother spun and knitted with these yarns. She made fabulously beautiful sweaters. She always washed them by hand in warm water and Downey. Never anything else. Not hot or cold as extremes cause wool fubres to migrate causing shrinkage. She left it soak 15 min them gently squeezed the excess moisture out before rinsing in more warm water, gentle squeezing the excess water out ( pressure also causes wool fibres to migrate,) then laying it out flat on a heavy duty towel before trolling it tightly in the towel. Finally it was transferred to a dry towel on a flat surface. She might finish the dry by moving it into the sunshine but most of the drying was done in the shade. A good wool garment should last almost a lifetime if cared for properly.
