For her part, O’Connell is somewhat averse to the phenomenon of literary privilege disclaimers, telling me recently, “Sometimes I wonder what I could change if I were writing the book now. I’d definitely have changed some lines that were sweeping generalizations, but ultimately, it’s my story and I’m a straight, white woman. It’s completely fair to say I have a limited perspective! Me constantly acknowledging that or apologizing for it doesn’t change it; it probably just makes it more annoying.”
Heaney’s complication of O’Connell’s narrative was personally meaningful to me as a queer reader, but it didn’t make me think any less of O’Connell’s writing; rather, it felt like the two women had entered into a conversation with each other about access, possibility, and family-making that I’d been fortunate enough to be let in on, and I have to wonder whether there would still have been space in the discourse for Heaney’s review if O’Connell had bent over backwards to insulate every word of her book from potential push-back.
Publishing professional and writer Angeline Rodriguez questions the recent ubiquity of privilege disclaimers from a reader’s perspective. “A reading experience doesn’t always have to be comfortable, but it should be consistent,” she says. “Privilege disclaimers can really break up that consistency and put the author in a defensive posture, and maybe there’s a way that it can be done well, but I haven’t seen it. If your acknowledgement of your privilege isn’t already baked into what you’re saying, then I don’t know that tacking it on in order to head off Twitter criticism or what have you is beneficial to the reader.”
