Tapponi is committed to showing 20 movies each month that are carefully curated to reflect specific scenes within the region and to showcase the work of underrepresented communities. Given the sensitive political context of many of the works, it was important for Tapponi to remain as independent as possible. “I was really insistent when we started it that we built [Shasha] from scratch,” she says. “I found it really crazy, especially during the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, the way institutions were suddenly panic screening lots of really radical political films, but using Silicon Valley hosting services like Vimeo or YouTube. If there’s so much discussion around politics of space offline, why are we so reliant on these Silicon Valley infrastructures? We worked with coders, and it was completely custom made.”
This inclusive ethos is equally present within the streaming platform, Shasha, which launched in March 2021. “Most people coming into the streaming game are, like, investment bankers, but I came into it as a film programmer,” Tapponi adds. “If you go on the platform, you can see video art next to commercial films that have had theatrical releases, documentaries, narrative films, artists’ films, emerging filmmakers. I think it’s really important for me to highlight marginalized voices too, especially Indigenous and queer filmmakers who might otherwise get overlooked.”
It’s this informed political outlook and holistic vision for building a responsible community that lends Habibi Collective’s projects their keen sense of authenticity—and an ever-growing, unprecedented global reach. “Our community is expanding all the time, but it feels very organic,” says Sadani. “That’s what feels most exciting to me.” For Tapponi and her collaborators, the real goal is ultimately to create an industry that can better support these efforts. “It’s not just about showing films,” Tapponi concludes. “At the end of the day, it’s about a responsibility to your community.”
