Also, maybe she’s just cold. Some thin women especially are quite cold, and A/C torments them. She might just be more comfortable in a jacket and always prefer a warm climate. 🙂 Autism doesn’t have to come into it, she is a 13 year old girl, it is such as awkward stage of life, your body is changing and I didn’t want to draw attention to myself at all. People may not have been looking but she felt like they were. I also had anxiety which really didn’t help the situation. Then bring autism into the situation, not always viewing the world as others so, she felt uncomfortable, that’s all you need to know. What many people do not take into account is not just the temperature of the air, but the temperature of the ground, sidewalks, trees, buildings, in other words, the surroundings. When winter sets in, everything is cold all around you. Even if you heat the air inside your place to 72 degrees, you are still surrounded by – well, your surroundings.
I suggest that you purchase her a light-weight jacket, a cardigan, a long-sleeved but teeshirt material shirt… something of the sort. My favorite shirt was a light-weight but long-sleeved shirt that covered up everything and kept people from staring at my adult-sized chest. I had a C+ at 14. If I wore anything with a neckline people were gravitating towards it. I had old women pull my neckline up… I couldn’t help having them… So, she has reason to want her chest and arms covered. Maybe she’s self-harming. I wasn’t. It was 100% embarrassment about my stupidly enormous boobs. She happens to be that exact age when I too loved wearing hoodies and long-sleeved shirts… so I would not be surprised it’s just body shame. Get her a few light-weight but modest and covering options, and let her sweat less while maintaining her modesty. A popular choice is a light-weight jersey hoodie, the same weight as a teeshirt, but with the coverage of a jacket. They can be bought with fun prints to suit her taste, in light colors to keep her cooler in the sun. Another good choice is tunic style cotton shirts. The “peasant shirt”. I loved those. Also, if she wants to look professional, there’s always the long sleeved business button up. If she wants to look casual, try a flannel button up shirt. Impossible to tell if she just likes country music or is gay, and super comfortable in the summer. I’m wearing a flannel button down right now. These will let her hide her changing body parts without sweating to death.
I knew a man who did this because he had extreme light sensitivity that any kind of bright light – including inside light – could permanently damage his eyes. Even if someone doesn’t have a condition, they might have temporary light sensitivity after an operation or medication. I suspect some people might wear it for psychological reasons – in particular if they were bullied or abused sometime in the past – it can put them at a distance from people and help them feel safer psychologically. Maybe some people even wear them for fashion reasons, or they are trying to hide something, like bruises or physical eye deformity, or indicate blindness. People have their reasons and I can’t see how you could presume their reasons. It’s not your business. Even if there’s no medical reason and it’s just a fashion choice, or they forgot they were wearing them, I don’t see how it’s something to be angry at someone for. How is their wearing sunnies infringing upon you in any way or hurting anybody? They can be too hot, needs to be some thin hoodies for people who wear hoodies all year round. Sucks to be sweating to death in a hoodie in the summer. My boobs popped out almost overnight when my period started… I was 11… my mom got me a training bra at the same time as the period… then I outgrew in two painful weeks, upon which we decided no bras until I stopped growing. (I hated them. I still do. I am not wearing a bra now, and only wear them on occasions.) So, when I wore a jacket inappropriate for the temperature, it was because I hated how fast my body was changing and didn’t want anyone to see my awkward bits.
